Artist's Biography

Born in Melbourne in 1959, Christabel is the daughter of eminent Australian painter Charles Blackman O.B.E. and the writer Barbara Blackman.

Christabel spent an international childhood with her parents in Europe and Australia, living in London, Brisbane, Buderim, Paris and Sydney. Christabel speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and Valencian.

She attended Alexander Mackie Art School in Sydney, attained a Diploma in Restoration of Easel Painting from Instituto per l’Arte e il Restauro, in Florence, Italy and later acquired a Masters Degree in Conservation of Easel Paintings from the Politecnical University of Valencia in Spain.

Christabel started painting as soon as she could hold a brush and from an early age was taken into her father’s studio to paint with him and sit as a model for many acclaimed portraits.

She studied life drawing for decades and attended many courses in painting, printmaking, photography, literature, psychology, dance and more.

Her father Charles taught her about painting techniques and about the importance of the image and its unique language.

Christabel has recently had several sell out solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows. She has won art prizes and her paintings hang in collections throughout Australia and Europe.

Christabel has lived for extended periods of time in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Buderim, London, Paris and Florence. In 1986 she moved to Valencia in Spain where she has lived for 25 years.

She has three children, Pepa, Miguelangel and Gabriel. She is a keen and experienced traveller and an extraordinary cook. Her studios are situated in a Mediterranean pine forest on the outskirts of Valencia, Spain and in an urban space in Sydney. She divides her time and talents between Europe and Australia.
