Artist's Biography
Judy Drew was born in 1951. Her passion for the post impressionist period and the influence of Japanese art in the late 1880’s, along with her creative sense of colour and form, allow her to create beautiful and modern work. Essentially, even though Judy’s work is contemporary she retains a touch of sentiment in all her pieces.
Her rich and textured pastels convey her emotion and love for this beautiful medium with work that is refreshing and strong in composition as well as sensitive to subject matter.
Judy studied Graphic Art at Prahran College of Art in Melbourne from 1969 to 1970.
Judy’s love for figurative work and her sensitive portraits of the Bougainville people gained local and international attention whilst living and working on Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea from 1976 to 1984.
After living in Papua New Guinea, Judy returned to Melbourne in 1985 and continued to concentrate on her figurative work and still life compositions. She also shows in her work an interest in Japanese styles.
Judy Drew has been recognized with numerous awards including the Omega Contemporary Art Prize in 1985 and in 1997 she won the Portrait Prize, awarded by Melbourne’s Savage Club. In 1989 her work was included in the International Exhibition of Pastels in France.
Judy Drew has held numerous solo exhibitions since 1983 in Victoria, Western Australia and New South Wales together with being involved in numerous group showings.
With sell-out exhibitions, Judy’s reputation continues to soar as one of Australia’s most talented and exciting female artists. Her work is in high demand from investors, galleries, museums and many private and corporate collections in Australia and overseas.
