Tiffany’s Research Notes on “Beauty’s Fortune”:
The original etching, from which this facsimile etching is faithfully reproduced, is dated 1920 and was exhibited in the same year at the Fine Art Society’s Gallery in Melbourne for an issue price of 15 guineas.
The Melbourne Age’s review singled out Beauty’s Fortune as the finest work in the exhibition.
Beauty’s Fortune was also exhibited in London and by 1930 the price had risen to 20 guineas.
Beauty’s Fortune exemplifies Norman’s technical supremacy with etchings, showing his delicacy of line and varied texture.
Norman himself was pleased with this beautiful and complicated etching recounting that all the women had charm.
The copper etching plate for Beauty’s Fortune was donated to the Mitchell Library in Sydney by Norman’s wife, Rose Lindsay in 1923.
