Tiffany’s Research Notes on “The Coquette”:

This lovely facsimile etching is a faithful reproduction of the original etching completed by Norman in c. 1929.

In this lovely work, Norman Lindsay concentrates on the beautiful figure of his model and portrays with skill and sensitivity the sensual curves of the female form.

During the late 1920’s and the 1930’s Lindsay spent many hours drawing from artist models who posed for him at his studio in Bridge Street, Sydney. Many of these girls were dancers or showgirls.

Apart from the striking sensuality of the girl featured in the “Coquette”, Lindsay heightens her feminine intrigue by showing the model turning her head to face us in a backward glance. With a clear and inviting gaze from behind her delicate lace veil she tempts us to follow.

Other Norman Lindsay etchings such as “Delight”, “Who Follows?” and “The Temptress” also feature a model in a similar pose as “Coquette”.

“Coquette” is an “unpublished etching” and very few originals exist of this work as only a handful or less were ever printed by Rose Lindsay, Norman’s wife. Rose Lindsay not only modelled for Norman but also printed all of his etchings.

Proofs of the original etching of “Coquette” are represented at the Mitchell Library, Sydney in the seven folios of etchings that Rose kept and donated to the Mitchell Library before she died in 1978.
