Eros (1928) – Important Major Study for the Watercolour of the same name – SOLD

Tiffany’s Research Notes for “Eros”:

This important, beautiful, and detailed pencil drawing by Norman Lindsay is the major study in pencil for Lindsay’s well-known watercolour of the same name, which was painted in 1928. As a specialist in Lindsay’s work’s I’m thrilled to present “Eros” because rarely do works of this calibre and important provenance appear for sale.

Norman Lindsay’s second daughter, the late Jane Glad, owned the watercolour “Eros”. In 1973 she donated the watercolour to the National Trust Norman Lindsay Gallery & Museum, Norman’s former home “Springwood” in the Blue Mountains. The watercolour, one of Lindsay’s most admired paintings, still hangs there today, radiating intense and luminous colour.

Representing the Greek God of Love, “Eros” displays Lindsay’s love of Greek mythology. Mythology tells that Eros was a beautiful, wild, mischievous and irresistible winged boy who was armed by Zeus, the King of the gods, with a bow and arrows of desire which he shot at random, evoking sensuous love wherever his arrows landed.  Interestingly, since early times, Eros has been shown as both a man and a woman. The Romans identified Eros as the winged and playful Cupid.

In Lindsay’s ethereal drawing, “Eros” is shown in the centre of the composition as a charming winged hermaphrodite surrounded by a court of beautiful admirers.

“Eros” is in excellent condition and presented in a beautiful black and gold frame. I wholeheartedly recommend this special drawing to any Lindsay admirer looking to include a very fine and prestigious drawing in their art collection.
