This lovely, classic nude displays Norman’s mastery of pencil, and his ability to capture the character of his models and the sensual nature of the female form. Norman Lindsay is famous for his mastery of drawing, both in pencil and pen and ink, chiefly because he was a perfectionist and practised constantly.

His artistic skill became apparent when he was a very young boy. When he was a child, Norman was often unwell and so he learnt to remain still and quiet, giving him plenty of time to draw which created a habit of a lifetime with Norman constantly drawing.

Norman Lindsay’s single figure nudes constituted an important part of his pencil works and many of them were created at his Bridge Street studio in Sydney from the 1930’s when he had greater access to professional artist’s models. During this time, Norman perfected portraying the muscular configurations of the female nude from every conceivable angle.

He kept the names and addresses of over 300 models and was noted for his respect and professionalism whenever dealing with the models who posed for his drawings and paintings.

Norman generally signed his pencil drawings with his initials “N. L.” rather than with his full name.

He continued to draw all his life and was still sketching for the hospital nurses right up to his death in 1969.  His last work was a pencil sketch of a koala.
