The orbs surrounding her are like worlds of possibilities or an alchemy of thoughts. In life, we let go of some thoughts to make way for fresh new dreams. In the painting, old thoughts are portrayed as the dimmer orbs that have been pushed back under layers of white paint to allow the more colourful orbs to take centre stage and represent new ideas.

When Denise approaches a new painting she is often not totally certain of what will eventuate. She works intuitively in multiple layers until a theme presents itself, often utilising markings such as the “sgraffito” technique whereby she inscribes over wet background paint before it dries to create decorative and playful textures that are common in much of her work.
