South Australian Landscape – SOLD

This delightful, and very affordable little landscape by the legendary artist Sir Hans Heysen (1877-1968), has recently arrived at the Studio. Hailing from South Australia, Heysen is one of Australia’s best-known landscape artists.

During Heysen’s life the beauty and popularity of his paintings made him one of our country’s most successful artists. He won the prestigious Wynne Prize for landscape painting a staggering nine times, a record that has never been surpassed.

Heysen was famed for capturing the spirit and unique nature of Australia’s countryside. We see this in “South Australian Landscape”, a small but beautfilly rendered  sketch in charcoal that utilises a subtle watercolour wash in rustic tones to portay with added depth a beautiful vista in South Australia, most probably in the Flinders Ranges.

Heysen’s lovely property, “Ambleside” at Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills was the inspiration for many of his paintings, and is now a living museum visited by thousands of people every year. As well as his romantic farming scenes from around Hahndorf, Heysen also travelled to the Flinders Ranges to record the rugged and stark scenery of the area, a place that brought him great solace.

This expertly rendered drawing is a lovely treasure and it is rare that such an afforable work by Hans Heysen has become available.
