Tiffany’s Research Notes on “The Ring”:
This Limited Edition Facsimile Etching is a faithful reproduction of the original etching, which Lindsay created in 1920.
“The Ring” shows Norman Lindsay’s amazing attention to detail and the way in which he could deftly portray fine and intricately patterned fabrics and exotic props in his etchings.
Norman often made elaborate headdresses for his models and always kept drapes of beautiful material as props for his backgrounds.
“The Ring” shows Norman’s skilful use of composition and dramatic contrast between dark and light tones in a limited space.
His supreme skill at drawing was also displayed in the many years he worked for the Bulletin magazine as their chief cartoonist.
Original etchings of “The Ring” are held in the collections of the National Trust Norman Lindsay Gallery & Museum (No. 17), the University of Melbourne and the Baillieu Library Print Room (No. 26).
The copper plate that Lindsay worked on to create this etching is also held in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria.
