Tiffany’s Research Notes on “Virtue”:
This facsimile etching is a faithful reproduction of Norman Lindsay’s rare etching, Virtue, originally issued in 1921 for the price of 10 guineas.
Virtue is without doubt one of Lindsay’s most beautiful etchings, both in terms of delicacy and mood.
The couple stand in a field of tiny daisies and spring flowers with doves of love and peace echoing their love for each other.
The aura of light around the couple signifies a pure love, which is almost spiritual in nature.
Norman Lindsay uses this evocative technique of light against dark in other etchings, where he emphasises the power of pure emotion and the incomprehensibility of divine love and genius.
Original etchings of Virtue are held in the collections of the Museum of Art, University of Melbourne, the National Trust Norman Lindsay Gallery & Museum and the Mitchell Library, Sydney.
